Description: Enjoy the outdoors and eat your matzoh at the same time! A moderate hike of about 5-7 miles, depending on our choice of route, which will include spectacular 360 degree views from the Sterling Forest Fire Tower (open on good weather days only) and other nice views of the Ramapo Mountains and Sterling Lake.
Meet: 10:30am, Tuxedo Train Station, Route 17, Tuxedo, NY
How to Get There: Car, Bus (Shortline from Port Authority Bus Station arrives at 10:14am) or Train (Metro North Port Jervis Line arrives at 10:17am – accessible via Penn Station with transfer at Secaucus or directly from Hoboken). Directions and info below.
Registration: PLEASE LET ME KNOW VIA EMAIL THAT YOU ARE COMING AND THE NAMES OF ANYONE COMING WITH YOU. BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR HOME & CELL PHONE NUMBERS! Also, let me know how you plan to arrive and, if you are coming via car, would you be able to take anyone with you from the train station to Sterling Forest.
You must register with me to participate. Please don’t just “show up.”
Cost: $4 JOC Fee
What to Bring:
1) Bug spray! Insects were an “issue” on the Chol Hamoed hike last year. Let’s show them we’re smarter this year!
2) Kosher for Pesach Lunch (which prevents us from being mistaken for the EOC – Egyptian Outdoors Club).
3) Snacks
4) Good Hiking Shoes/Boots
5) 2 Liters of H2O (minimum)
6) Camera (optional)
7) A Good Attitude (not optional)
Important Notes:
1) Because of the upcoming holidays, I will not be arranging carpooling (i.e. you are on your own). You can arrange your own carpools or take mass transit for this hike.
2) Rain will cancel this hike. If you’re not sure, call me in the morning after 6:00am. I will give my phone numbers to everyone who is registered.
3) If we don’t have enough cars at the Tuxedo Train Station to//www.coachusa.com/shortline/ss.details.asp?action=Lookup&c1=New+York&s1=NY&c2=Tuxedo&s2=NY&resultId=125239&order=&dayFilter=Su&scheduleChoice=&sitePageName=%2Fshortline%2Fss%2Edetail shuttle everyone to Sterling Forest, we may switch to an alternative hike to Smith Caves in Harriman State Park that begins at the train station itself.
4) In case we get lost, bring only matzoh, NOT BREAD, to leave a trail of crumbs to find our way back (who needs a fancy GPS device when we can use unleavened bread – just as effective, at a fraction of the price).
Please see the venue information for Sterling Forest for directions and transportation to the Tuxedo train station.
Happy Pesach!
