Description

For the second straight year, we are going to attempt to do something a bit nuts. That is, raft the Hudson River Gorge at PEAK water levels.

Heres the way it works. I am currently on "standby" with the guides over at Wildwaters Rafting, a company we have used for many years, who always do well by us. We will be getting the call when the Hudson Gorge, a river in the Adirondacks, swells from the typical class III-IV 5 foot levels to the 8 and 9 foot levels that it reaches once a year when the snow melt from the High Peaks of The Adirondacks reaches its peak. The surge of water means you get as about an exciting a trip as you could imagine, while being short of suicidal.  This is serous stuff, ladies and gentlemen!

This trip is for experienced rafters only - i.e. - you have rafted at least one class III river before. FYI, The Delaware is class I. The Lehigh qualifies at high water levels. More importantly than your experience is your ability to not panic should you take an accidental swim in a frothy, churning maelstrom that is 38 degrees Fahrenheit.

Since they never have too much notice for this kind of thing, expect an email giving you about 24-48 hours notice to call in "sick". Most likely, it will be on a weekday (not Friday, of course). Last year, unfortunately, it was on Pesach, so we missed it. This year, the river is still frozen over, and the peak will likely be during the last two weeks of April, or possibly even May.

So why am I telling this to you now?
a) To psych you up for it
b) So that when you see an email subject, entitled "Whitewater Insanity", dont push off reading it for a few days - it is likely a very time sensitive email.
c) So you can get permissions from your mommies in advance :)

Anyway, stay tuned for an email, and hope to see you on the River! Yeah Baby!!!
