Description

Where:

Minnewaska State Park is located on Route 44/55, next to the Mohonk Preserve and a few minutes from New Paltz, NY, which is north on the NYS Thruway, about 1.5 hours from NYC.

Park Info:

Managed by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, Minnewaska comprises approximately 12,000 acres of wild and scenic landscape on the Shawangunk ridge. What youll find here is the essence of what the Shawangunks have to offer. Clear streams and lakes, conglomerate cliffs, waterfalls, miles of carriageways and trails, all against a backdrop of beautiful vistas, including outstanding views of the neighboring Catskill Mountains.

Hike Info:

The JOC will lead an easy hike, with priority given to those in wheelchairs, families with strollers, and then to the rest of the bunch.

The duration of the hike will be about 3 hours.

The surface of the trails in our hike is primarily pressed gravel and is designed for biking. It is ideal for wheelchairs (or strollers) but be prepared for a few rough patches along the way.

We would like the participants to comprise of 35% wheelchair/strollers and 65% others. We would like to depend on the rest to assist those in wheelchairs, as this is not a paved runway. This is a doable hike for those in wheelchairs; a hike nonetheless.

Option: Water Street Market

Treat yourselves out to the Water Street Market (http://www.waterstreetmarket.com) after the hike, a small outdoors shopping village just 10 minutes from the hike.

Set along the beautiful Walkill River overlooking the dazzling Shawangunk Ridge, Water Street Market evokes the charm of a Swiss Mountain Village. Shop in a relaxed atmosphere for fine art, world-class photography, international gifts, cozy cafes, vintage antiques and hip fashions.

What to Bring:

Please bring a bottle of water, lunch and snacks. A camera would be nice since the scenes are breathtaking. Sunscreen is advised. Don’t come with duffel bags and pop-up tents; leave all of that at home or in the car.

Meeting Time & Place:

We will meet at the Wildmere Parking Lot at the Minawaska State Park @ 9:55 am on 6/24/07.

Fees:

JOC: $2 for adults; $1 for children (under 12)

No fee for those in wheelchairs or strollers

Parking: $7 parking fee per car.

Final Note:

I’d like everyone to give this some thought; people in wheelchairs are entitled to the fun we are and are capable of it too—with little intervention from the rest of us. Maybe approach the guy in shul or the lady a work, who are in wheelchairs. Send them to our website and encourage them to sign up. The Jewish community is full of fun people in wheelchairs who would love to participate but will be unable to if we don’t get the word out!
