Description

***WARNING – Strong words ahead***

On June 3rd, we will be in the Catskill Mountains, hiking the Burroughs Range – Wittenberg, Cornell and Slide Mountains. This will be an extremely strenuous 9.8 mile mountain hike and should not be attempted by most readers. This is a trip for the strong hikers. We will be moving at a moderate pace. We will not be taking breaks every ten minutes. We will not be stopping for lunch for an hour. There will be no sweep - you will have to keep up on your own or turn back to the cars.

Food to bring: If you have to be told what food to bring, this hike is not for you.

Drinks to bring: If you have to be told what drinks to bring, this hike is not for you.

Gear to bring: If you have to be told what gear to bring, this hike is not for you.

(Are you seeing the pattern here?)

Warning: I/we reserve the right to turn you away if you come inappropriately equipped. If you do not have the proper gear, you will be putting yourself in danger and I/we will not take the responsibility for allowing you to hurt yourself.

Seriousness of warning: Very.

Who this hike is for: This hike is intended for the hard core, advanced hikers who have no problems looking at a mountain and saying “Yeah – I can do that”. If you finish Breakneck and say, “That was fun, lets do it again”, this is your hike. If read the above and are excited – welcome aboard.
You have to be in good shape and able to hike at a pace of about 2 miles per hour and tackle approximately 3000 feet in elevation (gain and loss) in 9.8 miles.

Who this hike is *not* for:
- If you read the above and are a little scared;
- If you have never hiked up a mountain before;
- If you get winded walking up a few flights of stairs;
- If you have any doubts whether you can handle it;
- If your break times are longer than your hiking times;
- If you have trouble keeping up on other JOC hikes,
then this hike will be too much for you. Please stay home. There will be plenty of easier hikes for you in the future.

How to register: Please send an e-mail to joc_hike AT mlehmann DOT com  containing all of the following information:

1) Your name (and the name of anyone else you are registering)

2) Your telephone number (the best way for me to reach you - both before and on the way to the hike) (and the number of anyone else you are registering)

3) Your e-mail address (and the e-mail address of anyone else you are registering)

4) Where you will be leaving from

5) Can you provide transportation?
 a. If yes, how many can you transport in your vehicle
 b. Drivers helping out by coming into the city to pick up passengers will be given priority of having a full car (i.e. we’ll try to fill your car so you can get the max $)

6) A brief history of the hardest hikes you have done recently – this is the part where you have to prove that you should be allowed on the hike.

If you do not provide the requested information, I cannot guarantee your registration.

Return time:  Late. Count on it.

Number of hikers: I will be accepting registration for up to 10 hikers
on a first come-first served basis. Priority will be given to people who can provide transportation.

Rain cancellation: Not sure yet.

Please understand – I am being very serious and overly tough because this will be an advanced hike. One non-advanced person who can’t keep up, or is not properly equipped will ruin it for everyone. If you are not up to this hike but decide to come along anyway, I will have no reservations about leaving you in the parking lot at the trail head or sending you down to the cars to wait for however long it takes until we return.
Please be honest with yourself and understand your own limitations before registering. It will save us all a lot of trouble.
