DESCRIPTION
Did you miss JOC Fun Day and now feel left out because your friends are all buzzing about the good times they had? Did you go, have a blast, but wish you had tried a harder hike than you had? Did you go, have a blast, master the “extreme” hike but were waiting the whole time for a good, steep scramble and are still waiting?
Well now’s your chance to strap on your boots and join us for a challenging scramble to Popolopen Torne. After the desert Jews accepted the Torah, Moses scrambled up Mount Sinai to receive the Tablets, and after Shavuot, we will do a little climbing ourselves to remember his heroics, work off the holiday calories, and maybe eat some Twizzlers.
Distance: approximately 6 miles (approximately 4 hours but could run up to 6 hours depending on group size and pace)
Elevation Gain: approximately 1250 feet
Difficulty Level: strenuous (some steep climbing and rock scrambling - you may need to use both your hands and feet, and you need to have healthy knees, agility, and good balance). We will keep a moderate pace (not rushing but also not leisurely).
Hike Features: views of an old dam, Roe Pond, aqueducts, Popolopen creek, and 360 degree open views at the summit, including: Bear Mountain Bridge, Hudson River, Brooks Lake, and Anthony’s Nose to the east; Bear Mountain to the south; and the hills of West Point Military Academy to the west.
For more details about the hike read this hike description:
http://www.nynjtc.org/hike/popolopen-gorgepopolopen-torne-loop
Note: Although our actual route will no t exactly match their description, it will provide you with a sense of the terrain, features, and difficulty level of the Popolopen Gorge area. For an itinerary that is closer to, but not necessarily exactly the route we will take, see Hike #23 in 50 Hikes in the Lower Hudson Valley (Green & Zimmerman).
WHAT TO BRING
Essentials: $3 JOC fee, a good attitude, minimum 2 liters of water (3 liters is recommended), lunch, snacks, backpack, hiking boots/trail shoes/high top sneakers, sun hat/baseball cap, sunscreen, extra layer (long sleeve tee/fleece sweatshirt), windbreaker/rain poncho

RAIN CANCELLATION POLICY
Cloud cover or overcast weather will not cancel. Steady rain will cancel the hike. Light rain, drizzle, or mist will probably cancel due to slipperiness. I will give out my phone number to registered participants only and you can check with me morning of if conditions are questionable. Tentative rain check date is Sunday, June 21.
TRANSPORTATION & MEETING DETAILS
We will be traveling by carpools. Thank you to all drivers in advance. I will be facilitating but not arranging rides for passengers. Contact information about volunteer drivers from your area will be sent to passengers via email and you will be responsible to contact them to secure your ride. If necessary, you may be asked to meet your driver at a meeting point of convenience.
Passengers: Please be courteous to drivers since they are volunteering their services. Don’t book a ride with multiple drivers, bring exact change, and pay your driver appreciation fee BEFORE being asked. And survive we did. We survived West Point choppers closing in at close range, exploding bombs and shells (okay they claim they were cannons going off as part of some historic reenactment, but WE didn’t know that), a good solid scramble to the summit (the trail goes straight up?!?), and local traffic on Mine Road.
At the top we were rewarded with 360 degrees sweeping views of the hills of West Point, the Hudson, Bear Mountain Bridge, and Bear Mountain itself. We also enjoyed samples of a variety of vegetarian delicacies including Yair’s watermelon, Stacey’s kale, Vitali’s sweet potatoes, and my bottomless bag of Twizzlers (What! Twizzlers is definitely a fruit).
17 in 17 out equals 100% survival rate. Hooray!
Unless, of course, you count the one shoe fatality; kudos to Josh for finishing the hike without it…or the friendly tick with nine lives that Jon decided to bring home in my car.
And now the thank you section. Thank you to:
- All the generous drivers- Vitali, Zev, Seth, Beila, Aaron, & Nachi- we could not have gotten there without you, literally.
- Vitali for picking up and bringing the walkie-talkies from Riverdale & Beila for returning them to their rightful home in Teaneck (and for trying to pick up the first aid kit, which thank g-d went unmissed).
- Our orienteering staff, Yair & Aaron, who faithfully followed the blue blazers wherever they went, even when that meant (sort of) trespassing on army property or cozying up to private houses. (“Nachi, do you think they’d let us use their bathroom?”)
- Our sweep staff, Vitali & Jon, for making sure nobody was left behind to be eaten by the bears or the injured deer.
- Maurie Backman, V.P. of JOC, for walking me through the organizing process so graciously and helping me smooth over the bumps in the path.
Thank you all for joining me, despite it being my first time organizing, on this adventure and consuming all the leftover Twizzlers. Hope to see you soon at other JOC events. Check the website for awesome upcoming trips throughout the summer.
