Description

Hi all, and Shana Tova!

On Sunday evening, September 26, the Jewish Outdoors Club is joining up with the Jewish Renaissance Experience (JRE) to bring you a short hike followed by a sunset kumzitz atop
Anthony's Nose in Harriman State Park.
The last time we did such an event was 2003, and it was a fabulous success, with nearly 60 people coming together for an amazing evening led by Reb Gili Houpt (now in Israel).
This year, the kumzitz will be led by the talented and inspirational duo of Rabbi Tzvi Sytner and Rabbi Avi Hoffman of the JRE. This is, however, a participatory event, with not only voices, but guitars, bongos, and didgeridoos all welcome.
Here are more details, in Q and A form.
WHAT IS A KUMZITZ?
A Kumzitz is a gathering, (literally meaning "come sit" in Swahili), where people sing slow songs typically led by guitar.
"WHAT IS THE JRE?
The Jewish Renaissance Experience is an organization dedicated to exciting, energizing and thought provoking Jewish programming for the Westchester Jewish community. One of the many things they do great are rocking musical "Kumzitz's".
Their website is http://www.thejre.org/
WHERE ARE WE GOING?
We are headed to Anthony's Nose, which is a thousand foot high bluff overlooking the Hudson River, the hills of Harriman State Park, and the Bear Mountain Bridge, which is a very narrow bridge, a very narrow bridge, a very narrow bridge.
The viewpoint where we are having the kumsitz also faces West, so if the evening is clear, we'll enjoy a nice sunset.
IS THE HIKE DIFFICULT?
No. This is a 2.2 mile round trip hike, with 700 feet of vertical gain, which will take about 40 minutes to do each way. There are a couple of steep points, but is isn't too bad. On a scale of 1-10, the hike earns a 1 for length, and a 2.5 for terrain.
The hike is also listed in the book  "Best Hikes for Children in the Catskills and Hudson River Valley".
WHAT IS THE TIMETABLE?
The plan is to depart at 5pm and hike up to the peak, starting the kumzitz at the top at around 6pm. We'll formally head down some time between 8 and 9, but people can leave as they wish as the trail is very well marked.
IS TRANSPORTATION ARRANGED?
I will send out a spreadsheet of available drivers and contact information prior to the event. You are on your own to make arrangements.
Public transportation options are also available via Metro North Hudson line to Peekskill, and from there, you can take a 5 mile taxi ride to the trailhead.
WHAT IS THE COST?
The cost of the event is $5, which covers basic administrative expenses of the organizations involved, as well as some funds to bribe the power that be for good weather.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Bring water, snacks/dinner, sunscreen, a windbreaker or jacket, money for driver reimbursement, camera, your best singing voice, and VERY IMPORTANT - A FLASHLIGHT. Oh, and extra batteries. If you want, you can bring a blanket or cushion to sit on too.
Please note that there will not be a succah, (unless someone volunteers to bring one), so bear that in mind as you make your dinner plans.

WHAT IF IT RAINS?
Rain, even slight, cancels this event. We're sorry, but refunds cannot be given.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Registration is at www.hikeandkumzitz2010.eventbrite.com . There are only 60 spots available, owing to space considerations at the viewpoint. The event is very likely to sell out.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS
Please go to googlemaps and type in your destination as "Anthony's Nose". It is the one located in Westchester county,  New York, not El Paso, Texas.
Park your car along 9D, about 1/8 of a mile north of Bear Mountain Bridge. We'll meet there.

Hope to see ya there!!!
