Description

I know what you are thinking - it's a typo, right? $119???

Are we sleeping in tents? Hunting for food??

Nyet -- this is a fully catered affair at a camp with cabins situated along a beautiful lake in Harriman State Park. See http://www.bakercamp.com/photogallery.htm
With this event, the JOC is going back to its roots, with a fun filled, informal, rustic retreat in the cabins of Baker Camp, about 45 minutes from the GWB.  We booked this lodge 7 months ago, and got the only weekend in June still available.

We can offer you this price because:
A) We are a non-profit 501c(7) organization, run entirely by volunteers. We price more or less at cost, and if there is anything extra, it goes back into the organization.
B) We have no marketing expenses - just our email list and word of mouth.

There is space for 120 people, and we anticipate that it will fill up. The $119 price is valid until Tuesday, June 2nd at Noon. Following that, the price is $139.

Here is the scoop: Please read carefully to learn all the details!

When is it?
The retreat will take place from Friday afternoon, June 12 to Sunday late afternoon, June 14

What is the itinerary?

Friday: Arrive, enjoy the camp amenities, and hang out a bit before Shabbat. We will then daven Kabbalat Shabbat, and enjoy a catered Shabbat dinner. We will have some icebreaker games, play board games and schnapps games, and chilax the night away.

Shabbat: Daven, eat, and enjoy a short walk in the woods led by your fearless/clueless leader. Then we'll enjoy various sessions led by participants. Past sessions have included Torah shiurim, palm reading, learning to play bridge, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (personality types). We will have mincha, seudah shlishit, and maariv and after Shabbat, we'll enjoy some Saturday night evening activities, along with some melava malka food.

Sunday: Enjoy one of two options:
A) An action-packed day visiting two Revolutionary War historic sites adjacent to Bear Mountain State Park - Fort Montgomery Battlefield State Historic Site, and Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site.  We have arranged private guided tours of the two sites, including:  battlefield walking tours (not a hike, but it will be a hilly walk), museums detailing the two battles, costumed interpreters, soldier encampment reenactment, musket and cannon firing demonstrations (sorry - demonstrations only - not hands-on!), spectacular views over the Hudson River, and climbing the Stony Point Lighthouse (for even better views over the river).  This will be a relaxed day of checking out cool sites overlooked by most people on their way back and forth to Bear Mountain.  This option costs $10 and maxes out at 40 participants (first come, first served).

OR

B) Enjoy a moderate hike to Pine Swamp Mountain led by your trusty JOC board members (but bring flashlights just in case). Check out some great views and mines along the way.

Ok, so for that price, we're eating grubs, right?
No siree! (Surie, if you're from Brooklyn) . All meals are catered, with hired help to set things up. No toranut! Meals include Shabbat Dinner, breakfast, lunch, seudah shlishit, melava malka, Sunday breakfast, and various options to make your own bag lunch for Sunday's fun activities.

What about Kashrut?
The event is catered by Yossi's Takeout --strictly Kosher, all Glatt.

So we're not staying in tents?
No, we are staying in Baker Camp, located in the woods of Harriman State Park. The Camp has a private lake beach, tennis courts, volleyball, horseshoes, fishing, and rowboats, kayaks and canoes (boat rentals cost an extra $7.50 per boat). Cabins are rustic - think of the camps you went to growing up (if you went to Seneca Lake, bring it down a notch). But we do have a huge dining area, as well as a large rec room where we will be most of the time, hanging out and making new friends.

There are two types of cabins:

Smaller cabins hold 4 people in 2 bedrooms (and one small common area), but have no bathroom. There are common bathrooms/showers outside with full plumbing. Many smaller cabins are along the lake and have real purty views.

Larger cabins hold 8 people in 4 bedrooms and have a medium sized common area, and have a bathroom.
All cabins have porches of varying sizes.

Please note that the cabins are not exactly the lap of luxury, but hey, that's part of the adventure :)

Cabins allotted first come, first served, based on your preference.

What is the level of religiosity?
JOC is generally a modern orthodox group, but we pride ourselves in having a "come as you are" atmosphere.  The following types are among those welcome:

Charedi, Chasidish, Modern Chasidish, Fakidish, Yeshiva Black Hat, Yeshiva Modern, Modern Orthodox Black Hat, Modern Orthodox Machmir, Modern Orthodox Liberal, Lubavitch, Carlebachian, Conservadox, Conservative, Flexidox, 612 Mitzvahdox, Athiestadox, Kahanadox, Femidox, Orthoprax, and Post-denominational.

What is the average age?
The average age ten years ago was 21. Now it is about 10 years older (go figure). But we still welcome all people, from 21 on up. We are a warm and welcoming group that does not judge (well, not to your face anyway. Joking!) . Most attendees will be singles, but this is not a "singles event". Consider it a fun way to get outdoors and have a great time.

Wow- sounds way cool! How do I sign up!
