Description

JOC’S 2009 SUMMER ADIRONDAK CHALLENGE EXTRAVAGANZA –JULY 12 AND 13

Trip is FULL. Please do not try to register

Imagine hiking on NY State’s 2nd highest peak, with 1 ½ miles  of exhilarating scrambling up an open slide, going down an equally steep descent, followed by scrambling up oblique ladders set  between rocks and a boardwalk suspended above the edge of a picturesque alpine lake. On the second day, hiking up a 5,000 foot plus ascent (nearly 1 vertical mile) of which a large portion of the mountain is bare, giving you unprecedented views of all the Adirondack High Peaks all the way into Vermont, as you’re hiking up and scrambling up large slides. The 2 hikes are separated by lodging at the Alpine Club of Canada’s Farmhouse in Keene, NY, where we will enjoy gourmet homemade meals, bonfire, a vast meadow where we can play, communal sleeping and the company of good friends.

This trip has a high physical exertion/ shvitz cost though, although it is a financial bargain.

On day one, we’ll be climbing up Mont Algonquin, NY State’s 2nd highest peak at 5114 feet of elevation (5972 feet of altitude of ascent and descent). This year, we will be doing the full loop, with ladders and beautiful lakes on the way down. It is quite a steep hike at times, 11.5 miles long and a nice challenge. The rewards are tremendous though.

On day two, we will be hiking Giant, NY state’s 12th highest peak at 4427 foot elevation, but easily, its most difficult, with   8350 feet  (about 1 ½ miles of altitude ascent and descent) over 11 miles, the largest altitude change for a day hike in NY state.. Giant suffered a very large fire in the 1960s, resulting in the burning down of a large section of the mountain’s trees from whole facades of the mountain. We will be treated with large bare expanses of unopposed views of the surrounding hills, and of Giant itself and we’ll be summiting many lesser high peaks along the way.
