On a mild late January Wednesday evening eighteen wild JOCers made a brief emergence from winter hibernation to ice skate at their local Pond. Despite the lines and the crowds we managed to find each other and celebrate our reunion with waves and smiles. The seasoned JOCers blended naturally with the newcomers to the pack as we tore up the already torn up ice in the woods of Bryant Park. After the formidable zambonis resurfaced the Pond we became honorary lefties as the direction of traffic was reversed from counter-clockwise to clock-wise confusing some, dizzying others, and delighting few (the real lefties that is).

After circling the Pond innumerable times we came to the point where we could confidently proclaim: “I’ve explored this part of the pond already” and having failed to forage anything suitable for consumption, we decided to turn our attention to more conventional feeding grounds. Twelve members of the original pack of eighteen were joined by two latecomers at Jerusalem II Kosher Pizza where we ordered and ravenously consumed a wide variety of edibles including pizzas, soups, sandwiches, knishes, and French fries. After about an hour of jovial eating and socializing, including the more than occasional clawing away of French fries from other pack member’s stash, management started doing the closing the store dance and Nachi begrudgingly led the pack back into the cold, dark wilderness of Manhattan where it broke up into sub-packs who returned to their respective hibernation quarters in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Upper West Side to winter until the next instinctual ice skating call beckons. (Hopefully, but not confirmed, sometime in February.)

Thank You Section

Thank you to fellow JOC organizers Shani S. and Amy F; Shani for organizing this event last year and thereby unknowingly inspiring me to continue the tradition this year, Amy F. for encouraging me to become an organizer in the first place, and both for coming, being supportive, and providing additional JOC cheer.

Thank you all for joining me on another exciting adventure. I hope to see you again soon at other JOC events. Check the website for upcoming trips and have a great winter.

See you on the trails!

Description

The Pond ice skating at Bryant Park, sponsored by Citi Bank, is in its last week and will be closing shop for winter 2009-2010 on January 24th. For all procrastinators like me, this is our last chance to get out there and enjoy skating under the skyscrapers of Midtown Manhattan with your fellow JOCer buddies. EVENT DETAILS WHO: some hip, adventurous Jews WHAT: ice skating (with the option for a bite to eat afterwards) WHERE: The Pond at Bryant Park (the park is located in the square block between Fifth and Sixth Avenues and between 41st and 42nd Streets in Midtown Manhattan) WHEN: Wednesday, January 20, 6:30 PM (until approximately 9:30 PM) WHY: Why not? COST: skating is free! (no you’re not seeing things) THE CATCH: there is a charge for skate rentals ($12), for lock rentals for the lockers ($9), and to check your bag ($7-$10 depending on bag size). So in reality your cost will depend on whether you have your own skates, your own combination lock, and whether you bring a bag or not. THE GOOD NEWS: If you bring your own skates and arrive barefoot you can actually skate for free! RAIN DATE: Thursday, January 21 THE PLAN The game plan is to arrive at around 6:30 PM (you can arrive later if you need to) to meet up, check in, and rent skates; hit the ice around 6:45 and skate until around 8:30; return skates and meet again by 8:45; walk together to J2 Kosher Pizza located at 1375 Broadway of 38th Street (for those interested) and get a bite to eat and hang out there until they kick us out, which will be at closing time at 10 PM. REGISTRATION Please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with: Full name, email address, and phone number of each person you are registering AND whether or not you intend to join us for a bite to eat afterwards. Your registration is complete; you do not need and should not expect a confirmation email. NOTE: Even though we will not be collecting funds or limiting the number of attendees to this event, I am requesting that you do sign up if you intend to come. We’d like to have a good idea of who and how many are planning to come and how large a group to tell the pizza shop to expect. We also want to be able to communicate any change in event details to the group. Your details will not be shared with anybody so please do register yourself and anybody you plan to bring and please check in with me upon arrival. Important Friendly Tips: -Don’t come barefoot, it’s not worth it. -Do leave the extra baggage at home. That means avoid bringing backpacks, briefcases, lunch boxes, musical instruments, and anything else that you won’t need so that you will be able to fit your shoes and any minimal accessories you have into one locker. If you bring nothing besides what is on your pockets you may even be able to share a locker with a friend. -If you have your own combination lock, bring it and save yourself the lock rental fee. -Do bring your friends, relatives, and lonely neighbors.
