Description
SORRY, BUT THIS HIKE IS ALREADY "SOLD OUT."
Ice caves, a 180' waterfall, rare plant life, abundant wild blueberries and spectacular views of six states from atop the Shawanagunk Ridge have consistently made visits to the Sam's Point Dwarf Pine Preserve near Ellenville, NY, among JOC's most popular outings. Our 7 mile hike is suitable for beginners and experts alike because while the paths are relatively easy and level, the "rewards" are great. No special skills are needed for the caves because they are lit by solar-power lights and have strategically-placed stairs throughout. Even if it is a hot day, we will be able to cool off in the caves that feature snow and ice well into the summer.
The Nature Conservancy, which operates the Sam's Point Dwarf Pine Preserve, has named the Shawanagunk Ridge as one of the "Last Great Places on Earth." Because of this unique environment, they limit group size to a maximum of 12 people, so you are urged to sign-up as soon as possible. Signing-up via Eventbrite.com does not automatically guarantee your acceptance and priority will be given to drivers until we have sufficient numbers of drivers to take everyone. Due to the expected demand, please only sign-up for this event if you are certain that you will be able to come, assuming that we have space.
You must bring 2 liters of water, lunch, snacks, good walking shoes (preferably hiking boots) and a good attitude. Because we will have extensive exposure to the sun throughout the day on the ridge top, sunscreen is required. A digital camera and bug spray are also recommended.
The JOC fee for this hike is $3, payable on the day of the hike, plus there is a suggested rideshare fee of $20 from Manhattan, which covers the gas, tolls and the $7/vehicle parking fee at the preserve (payable to your driver). If you are coming from Brooklyn, Queens or LI, please add money to cover the additional bridge or tunnel tolls.
