Description
Join the JOC on our annual dog-friendly hike in beautiful Cheesequake State Park. Only a one-hour drive from Manhattan, Brooklyn, and North Jersey, Cheesequake offers an intricate network of scenic trails for you and your dog to enjoy. Here the are details:
What time are we meeting?
We'll meet at the parking lot at 11:00am and depart at 11:15am sharp. The idea is to take a few minutes to get the dogs socialized with one another before heading into the woods.
What type of shape do my dog and I need to be in?
This hike is easy for humans and easy/moderate for dogs. We'll be covering between 2 and 3 miles with minimal elevation. If your dog is used to longer walks and is generally in good health, this hike should not be a problem.
How do we get there?
I'll create a list of drivers and distribute it before the hike. From there, it will be your responsibility to get in touch with someone with a car. Passengers are asked to reimburse drivers $15.
What do I need to bring for myself?
While the hike is not very difficult, a minimum of 2 liters of water is required for you and your dog to share. Please bring snacks and lunch as well.
Wear sneakers or hiking boots, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt to reduce your risk of attracting ticks. (If it’s a really hot day then you can wear short sleeves, but long pants are strongly advised. You can wear a skirt with pants underneath.) Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are also recommended. If it is a colder day then layer up accordingly.
What do I need to bring for my dog?
All dogs need to be on a 6 foot, non-retractable leash. (This is a state park regulation and is non-negotiable.) Please also bring a water bowl and some doggy treats to make sure your little guy is hydrated and well energized. Finally, bring some bags to pick up after your dog.
***Important***
All dogs must be on tick and flea medication to participate. While I will not be checking for official proof of this, you'll be putting your dog in danger if you bring him/her along without the proper protection.
Are dogs of all sizes allowed?
Yes. The key is to make sure that your dog is in good enough shape for the hike.
What if I don’t have a dog but want to come?
Feel free to join us anyway!
How many people/dogs can you take?
The hike is open to 20 people and 12 dogs.
How much does it cost?
The cost is $3 per person (no charge for dogs) plus driver reimbursement fees as applicable.
What time will we be finished?
The hike should take between 2 and 3 hours depending on how long we stop for lunch, so we should be back at our cars by 2:30pm.
What if it rains?
Light rain will not cancel the hike, but steady/heavier rain will.
