JOC Thanksgiving Hike onto Turkey Mountain! Nov 24 (Thurs)

 

Come celebrate Thanksgiving Day by hiking with the JOC at the most appropriately named place for a Thanksgiving Day hike, @ Turkey Mountain . The weather forecast for Thanksgiving Day is expected to be high of around 50 degrees. Turkey Mountain is part of Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area Boonton Ave & Mars Ct in Montville, NJ and/or Boonton, NJ, conveniently located less than 1 hour from Manhattan, but still offering a very nice hiking experience which includes scenic views of Lakes, Mountains and the Manhattan skyline.

SCHEDULE:

We will meet in the parking lot at 11:00am and hit the trails 11:15am Sharp! We are about 45 minutes to 1 hour from the city. Give yourselves some extra time in case you get stuck in traffic or get lost. The hike should take about 3-4 hours.

 

COST:

There's a three dollars JOC fee to cover our expenses (please bring exact change)

 

Ride Share:

We will send out a spreadsheet with carpooling info to registered attendees. All passengers are each expected to reimburse their driver $13 to cover gas, tolls, wear & tear...

HIKE DESCRIPTION:

Moderate - 5 miles total a good part of the hike is flat but there are also uphill and rocky areas.

Driving Directions: (Trailhead GPS Coordinates 40.946827,-74.387682)

Take Interstate Route 287 South to Exit 47 (Montville, Lincoln Park), and turn left at the bottom of the ramp onto Main Road (U.S. Route 202). Continue on Main Road as the road makes two sharp turns – first to the left, then to the right. In 0.6 mile, just before reaching a fire station, turn right onto Taylortown Road. Continue on Taylortown Road for 1.8 miles until it ends at Boonton Avenue (County Route 511). Turn right onto Boonton Avenue and continue for 0.7 mile to the entrance to the Pyramid Mountain County Park Natural Historic Area, on the left side of the road, opposite the Mars Park Corporate Center.

 

PACKING LIST:

Bring extra layers (we expect the weather to be around 50 degrees), 3 liters of Water (you need to be hydrated even in the cold), lunch/snacks (turkey happens to be a healthy choice and usually stays fresh longer), hiking boots (or sneakers with good support for walking/hiking), comfortable hiking clothing that can get dirty, bug spray, 3 dollar JOC fee (please try to bring exact change), 13 dollars to reimburse your driver (if you are a rider), camera, binoculars, and a fun attitude!

NOTE: We reserve the right to turn away anyone who does not bring enough water or is not equipped with the proper hiking attire
